The English topic includes contraction, rhyming word, prefix, parts of speech, and irregular verb games. The Early Learning topic includes alphabet, coloring, and rhyming word games. The site also offers free-of-charge, an easy-to-use form for creating your own games and quizzes which can be added to the site. The site is suitable for grades 5-12.

Readers Theatre Online Canada. Readers Theatre Online Canada involves K-9 students in oral reading through reading parts in scripts. Lois Walker, a Canadian writer and performer, offers free teachers' guides and sample plays for duplication and classroom use, as well as links to other the Readers Theatre sites.

Reader's Theater Editions. Reader's Theater Editions, suitable for grades 4-9, is a collection of over 20 short scripts adapted from stories by Aaron Shepard and others--mostly humor, fantasy, and retold tales from a variety of cultures. Teachers are encouraged to copy, share, and perform the scripts in their classrooms. The site also provides tips on using the scripts in the About Reader's Theater Editions section, printable color posters of the heroes and villains in the scripts, and other materials for use with the scripts.

Reading Better and Faster. Reading Better and Faster, created by Dennis Doyle of Glendale Community College in California, provides self-pacing methods for improving your reading speed and comprehension. The site is suitable for students in grades 7-12.

Reading Dimension. The Reading Dimension, from Houghton Mifflin Company, is an online reading club where students in grades 3-8 read and talk about books with other students. Click on the book you want to read to find information about the author, a printable crossword puzzle with story words, and links to other cool sites. Then read the book. You should be able to find all of these books in your school or local library. After you've read one of the books, click on Kids to Kids Discussion to join in online discussions with kids from all over. The site also includes an archive of previous books and teacher tips for each book.

Reading/Language Arts Center. Reading/Language Arts Center, from Houghton Mifflin Company, contains a collection of online activities and resources for teaching language arts in K-6. Reading List for Class Use. Reading List for Class Use, provided by EducETH, is an alphabetical list of over 50 famous authors and their works (novels, plays, and poems) for high school English classes. Click on any author's name to find a photo and biograhical information, related Web sites, a synposis of the work, discussion material, and students' and teachers' comments about reading the work.

Read to Write Project. The Read to Write Project, sponsored by the San Bernando County School's Instructional Technology Development Consortium, offers a variety of online interactive projects for middle school English classrooms. The lyric poetry, historical fiction, and historical biographies projects contain useful ideas for teaching and students activities.

Reader's Digest Word Power. Reader's Digest Word Power is an online vocabulary-building activity where you try to choose the correct definition for each word. You must have the new Macromedia Shockwave plug-in installed to play Word Power. The site is suitable for students in grades 7-12.

Reading Room Activities. The Reading Room, produced by a weekly TV Show in the Silicon Valley, provides pre-reading activities for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Kids can pick a letter to find out how it sounds and to see a word that starts with that letter. The site also recommends a nice of list of books for these beginning readers.

Rebus Rhymes. Rebus Rhymes from Enchanted Learning Software contains online a collection of familiar stories (Mother Goose and others) where preschoolers and kindergartners can have fun picking out the words they can read in their favorite nursery rhymes.

Read by Grade 3. Read by Grade 3 provides current research information, about reading, reading disabilities, and assessement for K-12 teachers. The site also offers Grammar Packets with explanations and practice exercises for students in grades 6-12. This printable material includes over 100 pages covering topics such as prepositions, verbs, nouns, and other parts of speech.

Rug Rats Preschool Animal Alphabet Stories Page. Rug Rats presents a page of picture animal stories that provide a fun way for preschoolers and kindergarteners to learn their letter names of the alphabet.

Scenario Creator. Scenario Creator, for the primary grades, makes a complete story by having you pick animal characters and write the words you want them to say. Kids can print out their stories they've created.

Scenes for High School Drama Students. Scenes for High School Drama Students, maintained by Cathy Clarke, contains a collection of scripts, scenes, and monologues that can be printed and copied for use in the high school. The site also includes an extensive list of related links.

Scholastic's Kids. Scholastic's Kids Web site, for elementary students, contains the complete lists of the books for the Baby-Sitters Club, the Goosebumps collection, and the Magic School Bus series. Each book includes a short description of the story.

SchoolHouse Rock. The unofficial site of SchoolHouse Rock contains a collection of Grammar Rock songs that elementary school teachers can print out and use to complement their language arts programs. In addition, students can listen to them online. Song titles include "Unpack Your Adjectives", "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here", "Conjunction Junction", and "Verb: That's What's Happening".

Sesame Street Central. Sesame Street Central from Children's Television Workshop (CTW) provides the following online storybooks for preschoolers that feature your favorite Sesame Street characters: Elmo Minds the Farm, High Noon, and Thanks for the Memories. Shakespeare Classroom. The Shakespeare Classroom, maintainted by Professor J.M. Massi, features a variety of online resources for teaching Shakespeare in high school. Her materials include study questions for over 30 Shakespeare's plays, answers to frequently asked questions about Shakespeare and his plays, the filmed versions of Shakespeare's plays, and other Shakespearean sites.

Shakespearean Homework Helper. The Shakespearean Homework Helper is where students can ask questions about Shakespeare, his plays, and the history of England while he was alive. The author of the site helps students complete their homework by pointing students to resources where they can find the answers for themselves. He will NOT furnish students with answers to their homework assignments!

Shakespearean Insulter by Chris Seidel. Chris Seidel's Shakespearean Insulter delivers randomly a verbal abuse from one the Bard's plays every time you click on Insult me again. The name of the play from which the insult is taken is usually given, too. Three other online Shakespearen insult generators are Jason Myre's, InterLinks', and Planetary's. Shakespearean Poetry Search provides searchable database where you can search through Shakespeare's sonnets using single words, words in a sequence, or combinations of two words. The search pulls up the stanza(s) with the indicated word(s), and from there the entire work can be shown with the search term(s) clearly indicated. The site is suitable for AP English classes.

Shakespeare Sonnet Quiz. Michael Hildebrandt's Sonnet Quiz, for Shakespearian aficionados, tests your knowledge of all the Bard's 154 sonnets by your completing the "heroic couplet". Shoebox Online. Shoebox Online, a division of Hallmark, provides resources to stimulate creative writing in grades 6-12. Toon in Here features an archive of weekly wacky, kooky, and zany cartoons, while Funny But No... contains a motley assortment of weird unacceptable greeting card suggestions.

Short Course on Hamlet. A Short Course on Hamlet, prepared by Ian Delaney, is an online version of Shakespeare's Hamlet, together with brief scene-by-scene commentaries and questions for you to think about for all five acts. Sample answers are available for each of the questions. Just click on Course to the left to go to the course contents page. To further your study of Hamlet, the site also includes other documents written by some of Shakespeare's contemporaries and famous critics, a collection of related links, and a discussion board. The site is suitable for AP English students.

Silly Storybook. Silly Storybook, provided by the Sacramento Bee newspaper, let's students in grades 4-8 make online silly stories. Students choose words and phrases from the pull-down menus, pick the story they want to use, and then click on the picture of the disappearing book. Students can read, print out, and share their stories with your friends.

SJR English Department. St. John's-Ravenscourt School (SJR) English Department in Winnipeg, Canada provides a variety of resources for teaching literature in grades 8-12. Scroll to "Resource links to individual plays" and click on a grade level to find study materials for Shakespeare's play and other literary works.

Social Studies School Service's Shakespeare Page. The Social Studies School Service provides a variety of online resources including activites from their booklets for teaching Shakespeare's plays in high school.

Spelling Test. A spelling test is an interactive online quiz of 50 commonly misspelled words devised by Mindy McAdams. After you take the test, check out the tips to help improve your spelling. The site is suitable for students in grades 6-12.

SpellWeb. Clear Ink's SpellWeb, suitable for grades 5-12, serves as an online judge for the coorect spelling of a word. For example, enter the pair of words "receive" and "recieve", or "seperate" and "separate" into one of four different search engines to find the number of hits returned for each. While SpellWeb may not always provide you with the correct spelling, it's more fun to use than a dictionary.

Spizzerinctum. Spizzerinctum, suitable for grades 8-12, lets you test your wits by guessing the meanings of obscure words. Listen to the pronunciation, see the word used in the context of a current news story, then choose from three possible definitions. You can also augment your Daily Jumble habit with the site's News Anagrams.

Stage Hand Puppets' Activity Page. Stage Hand Puppets' Activity Page contains tips and patterns for making paper and scrap hand puppets to complement the elementary school language arts curriculum. The site also includes short puppet plays written by kids.

Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments. The Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments contain a variety of 1998 sample test items that can help teachers plan their instruction. Included are tests for English, reading, and writing in grades 3, 5, 8, and high school. To read and print the tests, you must download Adobe's free Acrobat Reader.

Virtual Cards. Virtual Cards from Yahoo is a collection email postcard sites for grades K-12. These electronic greetings include famous paintings, fowers, contemporary scenes, birthday cards, and holiday cards.

Virtual Verse, created by CurioCity's FreeZone for grades 4-8, is an electronic version of a magnetic poetry kit where you click and drag words on the computer screen instead of a refrigerator door. Students can write simple verses, make sentences, or find words and arrange them according to their parts of speech.

Vocabulary University. Vocabulary University provides interactive vocabulary exercises including graphic word puzzles and games. Warner Bros. WeB Cards. Warner Bros. provides racks of electronic cards from where kids can select a WeB Card to send via email to a friend. The site is suitable for grades 4-12.

Webber's Anagram Crosswords. Webber's Anagram Crosswords, designed by Michael Curl, is a collection of crossword puzzles where every clue is an anagram. To print and solve each puzzle offline, choose the HTML format. Each crossword includes the solution. The site is suitable for grades 9-12.

Webcards. Adgrafix provides a variety of online greeting cards for holidays and special occasions (Webcards) which you can customize and then post on the Web. Card recipients get a note in their email box telling them they received a card and the Web address where they can find their greeting. The site is suitable for grades 4-12.

Web Word Finds. Houghton Mifflin's Web Word Finds is a collection of over 21 printable word puzzle in which students try to find specific words hidden in a puzzle. Each word find has 20 hidden words and a solution is provided for each puzzle. The site is suitable for grades 4-8.

Web Word Search. Web Word Search page contains a collection of printable word searches and mazes for students in grades 8-12. These puzzlers can make good vocabulary builders.

We're Making Macbeth. We're Making Macbeth is a multimedia journal of teaching Shakespeare to ten year olds developed through a course at the University of Sheffield. Wide World of Verbs. The Wide World of Verbs is an online grammar tutorial on verbs prepared by Mrs. Sundra's students from the Kyrene de las Brisas Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona.

Wild World of Words Challenges. Wild World of Words Challenges provides a variety of interactive word games for middle school students to improve their vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills. Students can do online word scrambles, anagrams, and other word puzzles. They can also figure out crazy word combinations, learn new puns, and correct misspellings.

William Shakespeare Filmography. William Shakespeare Filmography, an Internet Movie Database (IMDB) page, offers links to more than 250 movie versions of Shakespeare plays and related dramatic films. The Word Detective, written by master word sleuth Evan Morris, is a bimonthly online version of his newspaper column where he answers readers' questions by tracking down word and phrase origins. Word for Word. Word for Word features Terry O'Connor's answers to reader's questions about the origins of unusual words and phrases. The site also provides an online forum where you can dispute his answers or read others' responses in the forum archive. The site is suitable for grades 8-12.

Word Hunt Puzzles. Good News Internet Sevices provides a simple word search generator for teachers and students in grades 3-12 to create their own seek n' find puzzles. These word searches can be printed and copied for classroom use.

WordLadders. WordLadders is an online word game where you try to get from the starting word to the destination word by clicking on word links under the current word. For example, try "round" as your starting word and "count" as your destination word. The site is suitable for students in grades 5-12.

Wordplay. Judi Wolinsky's Wordplay contains an annotated list of "fun with word" sites. The site is suitable for grades 7-12.

Words & Stuff. Words & Stuff is Jed Hartman's weekly online column featuring an extensive list of topics relating to words and word play. WordWhirlWind. WordWhirlWind, an online version of magnetic poetry, let's you create poetry by clicking on the words and moving them around on the screen, as you would do on your refrigerator. To blow the words around, click on the WhirlWind button. The site, suitable for students in grades 3-12, requires Netscape Navigator 3.01 or Internet Explorer 3.0.

Word Wizard. The Word Wizard provides a variety of free online resources for those high school students and teachers who enjoy reading and love the English language. Among these services are Ask The Word Wizard, What Are Words Worth? where you try to name the author and the title of the book given the first lines or given the last sentences of celebrated novels, Says Who, a section with a dictionary of famous quotations, and Says Who, another section with famous insults. Once you register via emai and are a member of The Word Wizard Club, you can subscribe to other services.

World of Kindergartens. A World of Kindergartens contains a collection of tips for teaching a letter a week using a thematic approach. These tips are alphabetically indexed and are suitable for use in any kindergarten language arts curriculum. For example, to find what the letters mean in the acronym "modem", click on search for an acronym, type "modem" as your keyword, and press the return or the enter key. Write a Real Book. Write a Real Book, a creative writing project by Bill Dallas Lewis for the elementary school, provides step-by-step directions for completing a 32-page, illustrated children's picture book in color. The directions show you how to write, illustrate, market, publish, and have fun creating this book.

Yahoo's List of Riddles. Yahoo provides an extensive list of riddle sites for grades 6-12. For more word fun, visit Don Myrick's as well as the music group Oxymorons' pages of oxymorons (combinations of contradictory words).

Yahoo's List of Words and Wordplay. Yahoo provides a collection of wordplay sites organized by category for grades 6-12. Some of the categories are anagrams, interactive Web games, random sentences, word of the day, and Pig Latin.

Yak's Corner. Yak's Corner, sponsored by the Detroit Free Press, is an online kids news magazine for grades K-6. It features global, animal, and news stories of interest to kids as well as an email Yaktivites section where kids can send in short chapter to a never-ending story, 'yak' back to the Yak, or participate in the "Stars of the Week" contest. In addition, kids can enjoy the Fun and Games section with six interactive activities including printable word seach and crossword puzzles.

Young Readers. Young Readers, part of the Penguin/Putnam publishers Web site, offers a variety of language arts resources for grades K-8. Teachers will find printable teacher's guides with discussion questions and classroom in the educational section, a list of books for the holiday seasons, excerpts from some of their books, and printable puzzles in the Winnie-the-Pooh section. Students will find a toy box with printable coloring pages and other fun-filled activities.
